Name: CAPT. RICH GOES COMMERCIAL FISHING !
Location: NAVASINK RIVER, N.J.
Date: 01/14/12

Happy New Year to all my fishing friends and family out there. Today I went out commercial fishing with my friend Paul who has been asking me for years to go out with him. Besides being one of the clammers we pass going out each morning fishing on my boat, he puts in fike nets during the short winter season. They consist of stakes or pipes put in the bottom by hand in the mud. There is a long leader of net starting off in shallow water and it leads to the catch part of the net where the fish can't get out. It leads then into a tapered net funnel, then they go further into the net to the next tapered funnel. Once past that second funnel, they are in the "parlor" and they can't escape. It is just like the commercial nets we see in the bay but on a much smaller scale. We went out in a 16 foot old row boat with a 40 hp engine. What a day with the weather. The weather man was predicting a gale warning with 50 mph gusts. Well........... for once he was right!!! It was not too bad way up in the Navasink river or all the way up into Red Bank. We pulled the three nets he had out in different areas. All the spots produced winter flounder and herring. He limited out with the 50 lbs. of flounder he is allowed and some of the flounder were over 3 lbs.!! Super sized fish. Plenty of smaller fish were thrown back healthy with many of those being keepers as well. We also landed about 30 lbs. of herring. These fish were beautiful and I could only wish I had these fish in a live well on my boat to catch stripers. The weather showed us: sun, rain, sideways hail, black clouds, wind to 40 mph, snow, and large white caps. But we also saw swans, brant ducks by the hundreds, a lamprey eel, and two rainbows in the sky !! All of this was done in just over 2.5 hrs. We launched the boat, after trailering it from his house in Highlands to Rumson, at 8 am. We were back at his house at 10:30 am, even after driving the fish back by truck to Belford Co.op to pack them out. What a different experience and what a morning! I am still trying to get dry and warm up with a hot cup of coffee while I write this. It is never too early to book that striped bass trip. May is booking up and I just booked another 2 trips yesterday. Time to think of your date and get it booked and out of the way before it is taken. THANKYOU. ATTACHED YOU'LL SEE THREE SHOTS OF THE TRIP WITH PAUL HOLDING UP TWO OF THE LARGER FLOUNDERS. CAPT. RICH NEWALLIS JR. Sandy Hook striped bass caught on the fly rod!! This week we had out Rich Winter for a full day of striped bass casting and jigging. The ocean was mirror calm and despite being very cold in the am, the temperature went up to near 50 by the end of the trip. We had birds working all day and stripers swirling on top. We caught them on spinning tackle with poppers on the surface. We caught them on Ava jigs on the bottom and any where in between. The soft Storm swim shad baits worked really well in the bunker color. But what Rich really wanted was to catch these stripers on his fly rod. He tried a couple different smaller flies that did not work. Then he switched to a larger fly that looked more like the sand eels the bass were throwing up. He immediately started to catch stripers on that fly. 24 bass were caught that day and were up to a high of 34". We even had some late season bluefish action as well. What a super day!! Fishing Report 6/21/11 - Skinners Falls,NY fished about 2 hours this afternoon with no hits...did see some shad swim by as well as watch the dead float downriver....from the bridge, you could still see 10-15 shad still chasing and swimming around....lots of dead ones on the bottom.....probably my last trip of the year, but what a great one! Anybody shad fish in Maine or the Canadian Maritime Provinces?? Actually right now is prime time for shad on the COlumbia River in Oregon.....easy 100+ shad days there below Bonneville Dam and a beautiful place at that that, with abundant sturgeon too!

Fished 5 miles below Dingman's bridge on the Jersey side, off Old Mine Rd. 7:30 till noon. 6 shad landed 3 or 4 missed. All were buck. Caught right below some rips, on a curren break, and the bottom. Lots of fight for the noodle rod. My son observed several fish within 8 feet of the shore moving up through the rips. Water temp was running 67, if not spawning they will be. Milt

Fishing report 5/25/11 - Fished the confluence of the Delaware and Lehigh from 5:30 to 6:30 PM.....landed 7 American shad (5 roe 2 bucks) and lost 3 more plus had a few hits, all jigging FAST a double dart rig 1/4 oz and 1/16 trailer dart into the Delaware waters which were clearer then the Lehigh. All fish fresh, no signs of spawning yet, hard fighters, even some big jumpers......this run has plenty of time left as long as the upcoming heat wave doesnt heat up the water too much.....BTW there is no one out there fishing, what a shame!

Got out today from 2:00-4:00. Fished from the bank. Water still high and stained. Landed 13 shad and a tiny walleye. Eleven of the shad were in the first hour, then it really slowed up. All fish were caught on #2 gold Mepps spinners. More bucks then roes.

Some spring weather we've had. I guess I was lucky to get a few trips in, but what a wash out it's been. Yes I'm a master of the obvious. Probably would have been one of the best runs since the 90s - if you could only fish it...

Fished from the bank from 1:00-3:00. With high water and low visiblty I fished a Mepps's #2 gold spinner. Landed 3 buck, 2 roe and an 18 inch striper. Not a bad day for my first time shad fishing in two years. Like to thank everyone who posts here to convince me to get back out on the river.

Not as many fish marked this morning. Fished 6am to 9am, netted 8, lost a few others. Fishfinder no where near as busy as last night. Scoped out mile stretch of river and very few markings... Decent morning, river in great shape. 56 degrees. Other than the usual bald eagle, had entire river to myself - never saw another boat.

awesome evening, after a slow, stubborn start. Anchored 3pm in my usual spot, 7 feet of water, marking a lot of fish which appeared to be shad on the Garmin. Not one tap, by 4:30! Moved back just above rapids in 10 feet, darts sitting in 11 feet and got all out blitz. started with a triple, then 5 on at once! Landed 16 by 6pm! It slowed down a bit, to singles and a few doubles, and ended up with 26 netted by 7:15pm, and about a dozen other LDRs. No chasing yet, which is surprising, but water is still only 57. I think If i moved after first 20 mins of no action, would have easily had 40+++ This was the action I was waiting for. Going out early in morning, hope to be anchored by 6am. Unless it rains 1/2 inch tonight, river is now in perfect shape, and running clear. Only saw two other boats, one had zero (he was where I started) and the other was right by boat launch and had one... Where are all the shad fisherman?

Another decent afternoon - not the non-stop blitz I anticipated, but managed to boat 16 of 18 hooked from 3pm to 6:30PM. 11 anchored, and picked up a quick 5 on the troll. Some smaller bucks mixed in, unlike the morning when it was all larger roe... The amazing thing about today was such a high landing percentage - usually I am more accustomed to losing as many as landed. Water was 53 in morning, 57 in afternoon. Still a little high and stained, but improving... Did not mark as many fish as I did in the morning. Surprisingly saw 4 other boats out, which was good. A fellow I know stayed on the anchor and finished with 17, so a good night overall.

FINALLY I GOT OUT!!!! - I took the day off today, and had "decent" morning, boating 8 out of 9 hooked, all big Roe between 4 and 6.5 lbs, with no bucks. Unfortunately - I know I missed the big April surge of bucks and the possibility of boating 30+ shad in a few hours. The river is still on the high side for my preference and still slighly stained, but between 6am and 7:30 am it was red hot with a triple, and two doubles. Only a few singles after that, and I quit at 9am even though we were still marking a TON of fish but they just wouldn't hit. I expect a very good afternoon though. This is the first year that I shad fished since early 80s that I was unable to get out in April, due to flooding. April was always my best month, but I'll make due with May and possibly fish into Memorial day, something I rarely do once the saltwater bug creeps in... Small 1/32" hot pink heads, white bodies, 5/8 ounce keel sinkers were the trick. I can see where downriggers will really give me the advantage in this higher water - it's still about 1 foot and a half higher than I like it, but after last month, I'LL TAKE IT... Kudos to the guys down in Easton like Pappy that really had some outstanding days already and have a spot you can fish when the river was so high....

Fished easton friday 130 to 330 with my son. he got his first shad this year and ended up with 3 in the boat. I boated 2 and lost 2. we noticed that one of the shad my son caught was exceptionally purple and a real fighter. i hope that means the early runners are still coming through. 3 fish on size 3 serrated in pink/chart and 2 fish on size 1 chart. the 2 fish that got off were on the size 1. i was the other boat Dick mentioned and for the 2 hours we were there, just up stream from him. he was getting 2 or 3 to our 1. that was cool to watch. i have never caught fish like that. with that kind of action i can see how u can got 100 in a day. Fished Easton today from 1pm-8pm. Had 36 fish in the boat and lost 17 more. Pink/white on a gold spoon was the hot color today. Water temp was up to 57*. Clarity was maybe 1' in the Lehigh water and almost none in the Del. water ( it wasn't quite chocolate milk, but close ). Another boat also did pretty good. Only 1 other boat for a short time and I saw them get a couple.

5-3-11 - Fished from the bank on the Jersey side 5pm-6-30pm. Hooked 2 landed 2, 1 Buck, 1 Roe. Roe was over 24 inches, Nice. Water was still high but down about 4ft from Sunday, still very murky. Water is too high to fish well from this side, snags almost every other cast to get in the right spot. All in all, still very fun :)

How are you guys even getting out this year to catch all these shad? I took week before Easter off to fish and water was too high and too cold, and every time it starts to improve it's another flood. The "river info" link now shows it just crested at the 16 foot measuring mark at the Phillipsburg measuring station, which is 8 feet higher than it was when I visisted my usual boat launch at Eshback last week when the river was right at the parking lot. This will be the first April I never got out, and April is always my best month.

I dont think this sites extended forcast is up to date. forcast for the Delaware river is for higher waters.. Riegelsville is to rise to 14.4 ft by Friday and Belviedere is also to rise. high swift waters are going to make it unsafe for most boats, Pleaase use common sense and caution..fish are not more important than your life.there are plenty of fish in the river,, this years run is the best that I've seen in ten [10] years.. yesterday three boats landed 358....shad..Rusty balls 122, Dave 106,Pappy 130,, org/blk, chsr/org, pnk/blk, wht/org #2 spoons were the trick on all the boats...Pappy

Duff, agree on the fracking issue. The news today told of a well in the Towanda area that blew yesterday spewing the polluted water into a local stream and contaminating the drinking water in this area as well a displacing several families. No more Free ride for Fracking ! .................................................................... I am very upset over the weather! I had planned on taking most of the week prior to Easter off!!! According to the Philipsburgh river monitor it rose 6 feet already and is probably still rising, so I doubt river will even be fishable in my spot nor will I be able to launch by Good Friday. I suppose in a few days I may be able to find some good shore fishing - I have spots from 20 years ago that really produced post-flood once water cleared, but had the boat already to go and was so pumped up over all the great Easton and north to Worthington reports! I really hate when this happens! Those of you that have been hitting it good prior to the latest floods - you are lucky! I guess the 22" rainbow and 11 others I took out of the Flatbrook yesterday morning before the rain was my consolation, but I really wanted to get the boat out this week!

River is cold (40 degrees ) and the snow in the Mtns ( 12 inches in Mt Pocono) will only melt and make it's way downriver. Let's hope for a slow warm up and plan to get out next weekend for the 1st trip. There are shad in the river now and they were caught during last 2 weeks during the warming trend. Get the gear ready and hope for warmer days and nights in the next few weeks. Mother Nature is in control for now... so much for the early Spring! See you on the river.... Wanted to inform all that the Delaware River Shad Fisherman's Association will be at the Greater Philadelphia Outdoor Sportshow from Feb 17-20, 2011 in Oaks, PA at the Oaks Expo Center. We will be promoting our Shad club as well as talking shad. I'll be there both Fri and Sat and would be glad to offer advice, tips and techniques for landing shad. Last year we had a great turnout. There is free parking and lots of seminars and national and local speakers. Please feel free to stop by our booth to learn more about how we are working to improve the fishery as well as to protect and preserve shad fishing for years to come. See you at the show....
