6/26/10

Recently the Delaware River Sojourn decided to honor the Delaware River Shad Fishermen's Association for their work with youth in promoting outdoor education in recognition of the DRSFA's Shad in Schools program and their Youth Fishing Education Day by naming David Bittner Lord High Admiral for a section of the Delaware River and Delaware Canal on which they kayak or canoe. Dave and his wife Susan accompanied the group of about 65 Sojourners which started at Easton and ended at Riegelsville, NJ, an eight mile enjoyable and scenic float trip. Following lunch at Theodore
Roosevelt State Park, the group held a brief ceremony in which Dave was presented an Admiral's cap. The group saluted their Lord High Admiral for the day as they completed Day 4 of their Delaware River Sojourn onward to Riegelsville. The DRBC is a sponsor of the trip. More information can be had by viewing this PDF.

I would like to thank all of the Club members and other interested parties who have been responding to the PF&BC's claim that the Shad stock on the Delaware River is all peaches and cream. We may have a self sustaining population (exempts the Delaware River from Amendment 3) but it is no where near what it should be.

I would caution everyone to keep their comments, civil, no personal attacks please. It seems that a few overly sensitive types have been taken aback by some of the more caustic remarks and suggestions. We welcome all comments, for the good of the Delaware River and it's Shad.

I would also like to draw attention to the fine articles pertaining to the Delaware River and Shad currently being written by Gary Blockus of The Morning Call. His articles shed a fair and unbiased light on the problems.

Remember the exemption mentioned in amendment 3, A self sustaining population. So maybe we will be allowed to fish for Shad in the Delaware ??

2/05/10

The DRSFA met this morning 2/5/10 with State Represetative Bob Freeman in his office located in Easton, Pa.

Shad in Schools was the main topic, with dedicated natural spawning shad hatcheries for the Delaware River a close second.

Rep. Freeman is well aquatinted with the DRSFA, he was very helpful with getting the Shad Ladders installed on the Lehigh in Easton and also at the Glendon Dam. He also promised to get a note off supporting the naming Of Norm Gavlic to the PF&BC Board of Commissioners, Northeast Region. All in all it seemed to be a positive meeting. I think that the more Politicians we make aware of the Shad the better.

The DRSFA must educate the politicians.

Thanks,
Ron Marks

Representatives of the DRSFA met with State Rep. Michael McGeehan, 173RD Dist. (Phila) on Tuesday, 1/26.
The meeting was attended by John Berry, Ron Marks (DRSFA), Gary Moore (PF&BC) and Staff members Pam Oddo and Eric Nelson.
The meeting covered the declining Shad run in the Delaware and the possible causes, the feasibility of using an abandoned fish hatchery belonging to the Philadelphia Park system for a natural spawning hatchery. The meeting was very positive and productive. I would like to take this time to thank Rep. McGeehan and his very capable staff for giving us the opportunity to voice our concerns. The presence of Gary Moore of the PF&BC was also very encouraging.

The more we can get the word out, the more help we can get in our efforts to help the Shad.

Thank you,
Ron Marks

BEST BETS TO CATCH SHAD:

Shad darts and flutter spoons of varying colors

SHAD IN SCHOOLS:

This program to get more shad eggs into the Delaware and Lehigh Rivers and to educate school age children about the environment and river ecology has been a real success this year. We set up shad egg hatching systems in four local schools and one environmental venue to raise shad fry for release into the two Rivers. This program has been very successful in the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers in Washington, DC. If you can help in any way for next year please let us know now so we can see how much we can expand in the future. We started with the five sites this year and will expand next year with five more schools. You can read about the successful Potomac River project in a book called "Let the River Run Silver Again".

LEHIGH RIVER FISH LADDERS:

No news yet.

HYDROACOUSTICS STUDY: There will be no Hydroacoustics Study this year. The NJ Fish and Game decided to use the Lewis Fishery as their index of shad abundance.
The study estimated that 160,500 shad passed the Rt.202 bridge in 2005 and about 114,000 in 2006. In 2007 the estimate was 181,600.

BEST BETS FOR SHAD FISHING: Studies have shown that a flow of 14,000cfs at Trenton is good for shad migration and a flow of greater than 30,000cfs will stop the shad migration.

I have set up a new service that can be accessed from this page - a blog for your fishing reports. Please check it out and let me know any suggestions for improvements
