Poxono to Port Jervis will have peak numbers of shad this weekend, but I don't see waters being fishable until maybe Monday, they are still rising and forecasted to go up another foot. Any good catches I predict would be further north from shore anglers. Me personally, would not take boat, but would consider wading but I am hanging it up for the season.

Kazoo. Could be real good. According to my fishing journals from past years the time frame from now thru the first few days of June is when I caught my biggest numbers of Shad. They are there.

Got a late start, boat in the water at 5pm.
River 2+ feet high and stained with moderate debris. Heavy current in normal spots, had to move. Took a boat ride north with the higher water to check out some new areas. Fished til 7pm, slow with a 15 minute flurry that put 3 in the net and a few lost. Hopefully this rain will not affect the river much. We lost two good weeks already.

Last hoorah this morning. Could not duplicate last nights action wading. 9 for me and 12 for my buddy. Kept a bleeder roe. Eggs very under-developed small and orange. Like early April. Seems some are not even close to spawning yet. That’s a wrap on a great but shortened season by losing at least two weeks to start off May.

Last time I fished before the flooding was 5/2, from shore. Went wading tonight with my buddy N of Gap, and we finally got the action we have been hoping for. 18 days no shad fishing in May, we were rewarded with with 59 shad between us... 2 rods. Not sure we could have beat that with 6 rods from the boat in the 3 hours we fished.... 60% roe, all fish very fresh. Now the rains are coming to tie the knot on end of season for me.... Most of the afternoon, we were getting a hit every cast and left them biting at 8PM..... Take it for what it's worth, but we basically lost 18 days of a very good shad run....

Fished up above port jervis last night, water at around 12000cfm and stained, my buddy and I had river to ourselves from 5-830, landed 12 shad between us , lost about the same, 3 smallmouth and a walleye. Fish seemed all nice and fresh, we were in a boat, but fish were up close to bank

Just northern watersnakes Linedog. They can be a bit of a pain in the butt, and a bit aggressive. You were probably standing on some nice location for them to sun themselves, and they were annoyed that any human would be so brazen as to be on their river.

Ya, river a little high to fish from canoe, backed out of that plan.Went up river to a few shore spots, first one only stayed an hour no shad, but the 2 snakes showing up right where I was standing in the waters kinda bothered my casting , got out of there. Next spot from 5:00 to 7:00pm ,hooked 10 landed 8 , red/yellow 1/8 oz dart. Also 3 smallies , 3 fallfish and 3 snakes showed up there in the water but they steered clear of me. At first spot thought they may be water Mocs ,but it happening at other spot ,probably just water snakes ? Gotta look that up

Fished 2.5 hours yesterday (Thursday) wading way above Port Jervis. Fished 4pm to 5pm and saw the rain coming from the south, and made it back to my truck for half an hour for shelter. Picked up 4 shad in that previous hour. Resumed fishing at 5:30pm with much fog on the river now. Visibility was no more than 1/4 mile. Didn't seem to bother the fish, though, as I landed 5 more in the next hour. Action seemed to slow then, so I put on a plug hoping to get a striper, but only managed a walleye and a couple smallmouth. The largest smallmouth (13") had some sort of parasite on the rear part of his gill cover and the adjoining part of his body. A grey growth of some kind. Didn't have my knife or I would have tried to scrape it off him. Total catch: 9 shad, 3 walleyes (2 on darts, 1 on plug) and several smallies. Water temp 59, 3.5 feet over normal low flow. Wish I had not lost that prime-time half hour to the rain, though.

High river: There was and spring and summer many yrs ago (1988?) the Delaware was high most of the summer. Caught smallmouth in mid-late Aug. that still had spawn in them, apparently their nest sites were too deep for them to use.

I fished the Port Jervis area yesterday from 1:30 to 3, I had 7 shad. My reel wore out after years of use and I had to replace it. I returned around 4:30 and had 14 more shad by 7PM. Then the bite shut down. Two others stopped by and fished for shorter periods, but both had shad at around 4 fish an hour average. I had one flurry of shad with one every cast. That lasted around 30 minutes before that group of fish moved on or something. Anyway, lots of fish in the area and higher water seems to be help my bank angling.

PHIL M. Roes stay at sea a year longer than bucks so the makeup of the run comes from 2 different spawns. The spawning is most successful when there are 2 bucks for each roe and when nature is in balance the run is 2/3 rds male and 1/3 rd female.

Richard: That is quite true. Only trouble is, when I see the weather report, I feel like I'm going to have a re-lapse of cabin fever. Actually, it seems there is a good percentage of roe in the catches this season. That should help future runs if it's true. Just sittin' tight here, waiting for water to come down to 3.5 to 3 feet above normal low flow.

ironic after one of lowest water April's I have seen in over 45 years of doing this, we start May with some of the highest waters.... Wishin' I was Fishin' ! This "should" help shore anglers as many spots that are "dead" in low water can be on fire in high water.
Be careful out there - and tight lines soon!

1st time out in 3 years and I needed that trip like that. 25 fish mix of roe and bucks. darts and flutter spoons of course in a variety of colors. Pink/black and orange/black seemed to be the color but we caught on just about every color. With good numbers of fish north to south I'd have to say this it's a good run this year. Be safe out there, tight lines and screaming drags.

Lot of guys out wading tonight. Everyone catching - some more than others, like two of my buddies, one getting 20 the other getting more than 20. Meanwhile I could never find my groove and only got 10. The storms missed us and when they passed the wind calmed down and it was perfect conditions. Seeing more signs of spawning activity.

Hi new boater....try big jon mini dipsey divers...I use them exclusively rather than plugs..They hardly ever turn and rise to the top in faster water....They are rated to dive 30ft....They have a diver that runs 40ft....Make sure to get the mini diver...in 8ft of water let out 20ft of line and hang on.....They come in various colors....Old time flat lining works good also....Good luck....lots of fish in lower river.....I do the hotline at 610 774 8116 with tips and conditions.....good luck...

Addendum:
Sorry folks,
forgot to add that using a net with rubber/silicone is best; no need to even handle the fish and helps keep the fish from losing it's scales.
The hook mod is viewed from the side, upside down J with mono piece coming off the side to form a Y. Hope this helps!

Gentlemen: I have been fishing the Delaware for 35 years at least. I can fish the Delaware only once or so a year due to the distance from Lancaster area and the closer availability of Conowingo. Camping at Worthington, we have some lean years of catches. This year it paid off (at least from what I'm accustomed to). This past week 4-29 to 5-1, basically fishing 1/2 days, we boated 33 shad. They weren't too fussy, hitting both flat lines and down riggers. We found the 4.5 foot depth on the riggers perhaps the best. Many were huge Roe and 2 hickories. We had a dozen or more strikes that didn't connect. Water temp was around 60 degrees and 6 ft levels - very nice conditions although some bothersome winds. Enjoy this great fishery and migration.

New Boater,
Are you getting deep diver crankbaits confused with PMD's which are used in fly fishing? (perhaps I've missed the newest acronyms for them). You can certainly use round or square bill deep divers but whether they stay down depends on the current flow and whether you're using a floating or sinking deep diver. There is good info online if you google "Deep diving plugs to catch shad!"
I've been intrigued by some of this site's back and forth about this wondrous fish. It travels thousands of miles to breed and die. If we're not keeping our 2 limit creel, let's be kind to them by A) crushing barbs on your lures for an easier release B) carrying along some metal snips in case a lure is deep in the gullet. Some of you may know one of our elders who goes by Chip; he showed me a fix for keeping shad from swallowing both spoons and darts by tying a piece of monofilament to the outside shank of the lure which then is cut level at the bend of the hook to form a Y, looking at the hook bend side up. Yes, I do miss some fish. But it seems to work. Since tying these onto my lures, I've had 0 shad caught in the throat. It does take a little extra time to prepare, I know.
On another note, I want to give a shout out to ShadHarris for keeping it informative and respectful. Thank you!!

Looking for some advise . First time fishing from boat using PMD . The lure keeps coming to the top . I’ve tried out short from the back of boat , long from back of boat , and same result . I have the round bills on these PMD . I noticed a lot of people have the square bills . Does this matter ? Do I need to add weight in front of lure ? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Wading in the same place as I posted previously from 5pm to 6:45pm. Only went 3 for 4 with a walleye and a smallmouth thrown in. South wind was intolerable and almost blew me over when walking on the rocks. Hated to tie-on a bigger dart, but had to. Water 63 deg and up 1 foot over low flow. Tomorrow will be hot with a low barometer and windy again. High water looks like it's coming soon.

After 4 straight days in boat for bi-state, felt good to don the waders tonight near Poxono. 4:30-7pm. Went 12/12 - mostly bucks after 85 % roe during tournament. Big lulls then got 2 on 2 casts 3 diff times. River back down and clear. Great weather. No complaints. I still feel best is yet to come even though it was crazy action well over a week ago.
