NICE JOB CAPT ALEX...WAY TO GET EM
Capt. Alex Craig | Green Lane, PA & Hatteras, NC | Thursday March 18th 3:46 pm
Thanks guys. Hopefully, the fish will show in decent numbers this year. We'll soon find out. Above all. Whether wading or fishing from a boat, let's be careful out there. Otherwise, this river can & will kill you just as dead as any ocean!

Finally! On my 5th wading trip I went 2 for 6 (hooked 6 & landed 2). The fish in the pic is the 2nd fish I caught. Both landed fish were 3# bucks. Fished from about 1215 o 1615 hours. Water temp shortly before I landed the first fish was 38.4 at the Riegelsville gauge and 38.4 on my thermometer where I was fishing. I've caught plenty of fish in 39 degree water. However, these were the first ones I've caught in water under 39 degrees. Not all that much, but hey, it's less! ;-) I believe this is the latest date I've caught my 1st fish in a decade or so. Ah well, it's a start!

JACK HARRIS ET.AL. THE DWGNRA SECTION OF OLD MINE HAS CLOSURES. THE WORTHINGTON SECTION IS OPEN. It was traversed yesterday from rt. 80 to the boundary between the two parks.
ShadHarris | | Wednesday March 17th 11:26 am
Actually it does specify that access from Rt 80 to Poxono Boat launch will be closed until April 15th.... Roads: In New Jersey, the top priority roads that will remain open during the winter months are Route 602 (from Millbrook Village to the NPS boundary), NPS Route 615, Old Mine Road (between Flatbrookville and Pompey Ridge Road), Pompey Ridge Road to Route 615, Old Mine Road between Millbrook and Flatbrookville. The section of Old Mine Road between the Worthington State Forest boundary and Millbrook Village and the dirt section of Old Mine Road near Van Campen Inn will be closed between January 2 and April 15. Additionally, Blue Mountain Lakes Road will remain open to the parking area for the Blue Mountain Lakes trail and will be closed to vehicles beyond that point for the season. Mountain Road, which is currently closed to vehicles will remain closed during this period, but visitors may walk, snowshoe, or cross-country ski on the road. In Pennsylvania, US Route 209 is the top priority road for winter maintenance and treatment. River Road in PA will be closed prior to snow and/or ice events and will not be re-opened until priority routes are clear and safe and conditions permit. Zion Church Road will be plowed after River Road has been opened.

Not seeing where Worthington North to Van Campens brook is closed? NEWS RELEASE Construction Underway for Watergate Wetlands Restoration Project NPS Announces Temporary Closure of Old Mine Road, Watergate Recreation Site, and a Portion of Van Campens Brook March 11, 2021 Contact: Kristy Boscheinen, Project Manager, 570-223-4335 BUSHKILL, PA- Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area has begun construction work for the Watergate Wetlands Restoration Project. The project will restore wetlands, floodplains, and a stream at the Watergate Recreation Site in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey by removing man-made dams and ponds, creating a wetland meadow complex in their place, and reestablishing the connection between Van Campens Brook and its floodplain. The project will restore the natural function of surface water and groundwater, improve stream quality, create high-functioning wetlands, and restore native vegetation. After the project is complete, the quality of cold-water angling and birdwatching are expected to greatly improve. Effective immediately, Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area has closed the active construction zone to all visitors, including the following areas: Watergate Recreation Site and the surrounding area (shown on map, attached) 200’ on either side of Van Campens Brook, and Van Campens Brook itself, from the south end of Millbrook Village (Garis House) to the Upper Glen trailhead. Old Mine Road from Millbrook Village to Lower Van Campens Glen Trailhead That section Old Mine Road is likely to be reopened to visitors by July 2021. The other closures will remain in effect for the duration of the project, which is expected to be completed in January 2022. Construction of the wetland restoration project began in late January with clearing of trees and brush that are in the areas where wetlands, stream, and floodplain restoration will take place. Erosion and sedimentation controls are also being installed to prevent silt from excavation work from getting into Van Campens Brook. Removal of the low, earthen dams and ponds will begin in May, followed by removal of the mowed lawn at Watergate, to create the wetlands. Work will also occur in Van Campens Brook to stabilize the streambanks and reconnect the stream to its floodplain. Invasive plants will be removed throughout the project area, and replanted with native trees, shrubs, grasses, and forbs. “After years of planning, studies, and design, we are thrilled that construction is underway,” said Kristy Boscheinen, project manager at Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. “Restoration of natural conditions at this site will have long-term benefits to native plants and animals, including improving the wild trout fishery in Van Campens Brook.” The Watergate Wetlands Restoration Project is a required compensation for the adverse environmental effects due to construction of the nearby Susquehanna-Roseland Transmission Line in 2013 and 2014. Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) and PPL Electric Utilities (PPL) have fully funded this restoration project. For more information on the project, please visit:https://parkplanning.nps.gov/WatergateWetlandsRestoration For more information on Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, call (570) 426-2452; visit our website at www.nps.gov/dewa; or follow us on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/DelWaterGapNPS.

David, In response to your question, you need to fish the channel edges and current seams. I would look for areas just off the main flow. I fish the Delaware R from a boat so I use different techniques; flat lines, plug rig and downriggers. Here's a pic of how I rig my boat on the D. Good luck and be safe. Kevin

Kevin - thank you for the information! I'll definitely use some of those tactics. Most of the shad darts I tied up are very bright and size 4-8, which should work fine. Do you have to cast very far out for the shad? And Joseph - I will definitely beware. I've fished tidal areas back in CA before and I know how dangerous it could be, so thanks for the heads up. Already scouted the area out and there are a few areas that look relatively safe. Where can I find your email?
Joseph C. | Phoenixville / Princeton | Sunday March 14th 9:35 am
David Feng, if you're going to try the Schuylkill, please be super careful. The rocks near the dam are treacherous when there's any water flowing around them. It might serve to go over to case the area at low tide. You can see useful tide tables based on the Market Street Bridge. Email me if you care to exchange more info.
Capt. Alex Craig | Green Lane, PA & Hatteras, NC | Sunday March 14th 7:40 am
Ken, while I appreciate the implied compliment, you'd lose money on that bet. I've done 4 wading trips starting 2/27/21 & my best catch is in the attached pic! There are a few other guys who have been wading who are as good as I am, as well. Thus far, no hits, bumps & not even a scale! I've heard by word of mouth that two boats have caught 3 each on different days in the lower river. If true, 3 fish, fishing from a boat with a half a dozen rods with baits in the water is not exactly dinging! They simply are not here in numbers & they certainly should be by now. Last year it would have had to come up 2 or 3 notches to be a stinko year. I fear this year will be even worse. That said, while I generally do not like being wrong, I SINCERELY hope I am wrong on this!
KEVIN INGRAM | Philadelphia | Sunday March 14th 7:18 am
3/14/21 River is rising and dirty. Cooler air temps will drop river back down and shut off any bite. Need some warmer weather. Snow pack melt up North is driving the rise in river flows. Fished 3 hrs on Thurs at Yardley in better conditions. Water temp was 47. No hits. Back at it once flows clear and temp rises. Tight lines! Kevin
KEVIN INGRAM | Philadelphia | Sunday March 14th 7:12 am
David, In response to your question on fly fishing the Schuykill for shad, best location is Fairmount Dam area. This section is tidal so incoming tide would be your best option. Use flies with lots of flash in bright colors that mimic what shad feed on in the ocean. Also small spoons in size 1 will also work. Here's a pic of some spoons that I use on spin tackle. Good luck and tight lines! Kevin Ingram

Thinking about giving fly fishing for shad in the Schuylkill a shot near the dam when the water warms up (next 2-3 weeks). Any advice for timing, technique, etc.? Came to college here from the west coast, where I used to fish shad in the Sacramento River system

We had a mild winter last year. Delaware was 48 at Trenton starting March 14 2020.. we're heading in the right direction.
Joseph C. | Phoenixville/ Princeton | Thursday March 11th 9:50 am
To reignite the annual discussion...They're already arrived, most likely. I bet some boat fishermen are thinking of giving it a try this PM or tomorrow, and they might even provoke a hit from those fish that bang their noses on a flutter spoon. Weren't fish caught last year at these temperatures?
FishermanFrank | Southampton,Pa | Thursday March 11th 8:18 am
Thursday 3/11/21 Yes water is warming 43.7 at Trenton this morning .43.3 at Lambertville this am not dropping too much over night. shad are on their way.

Almost 43 degrees at Trenton this afternoon. I know we're going to see cooler weather next week, but Hey, it'll be fishing time soon.

Mike, from Orwigsburg: Several locations to fish from shore. Forks of the Delaware at Easton where the Lehigh empties into the Delaware. Reiglesville on the NJ side access from where the Muskenetcong River empties into the Delaware. Check out the map on the DRSFA shad fishing page for a map with access points as well. Hope this helps and good luck. Kevin Ingram, DRSFA

Looking for advice about bank fishing in the Riegelsville area (PA side). I was looking at google maps and it looks like there may be some parking were Rt 212 meets rt 611 with access to bank fishing at that point. My question, is it possible to reach the channel from that point or is it too far out? Are there other spots that are better suited for fishing from shore? I was also looking around the area were the bridge is but not sure of parking availability plus were the channel is in that area.

All, A couple years ago someone posted about a squid flavored attractant. I tried it on chenille flies and had some success. Does anyone remember the product? Thanks

DRSFA, There are a group of us shore fly fisherman who would like to fish for shad with flies this Spring. Can you give us any shore locations along the river that are accessible ? Also interested in guides with craft that you can recommend. Thanks, Gary

The plug rig is an essential tool to utilize during the shad run to get your shad spoons to the proper depth. This method is an excellent method of getting the flutter spoon in the strike zone. I use the Storm Arashi Rattling and Silent 5 plugs with the hooks removed. I replace the hook at the end of the plug with a size 14 Spro Power Swivel attached to the split ring. Same for the line tie tiled to the main line. I have several of these Storm crankbaits for sale for the 2021 shad run on the Delaware. Send me a PM on Facebook Messenger or an email to :ingramk134@gmail.com if you are interested in purchasing any of these crankbaits. I have had 100 fish days using these on the Delaware along with my top quality spoons. Tight lines and see you on the Delaware.

I just re-checked the NJ freshwater digest and found out the saltwater registry notice has been amended to say registration is only required for tidal waters.
KEVIN INGRAM | NE Philadelphia | Thursday January 28th 9:57 pm
Got spoons??? I have plenty made and have stock in several sizes and hot colors for the 2021 shad season. These spoons are made with top notch components; Mustad hooks, stainless split rings and gold, silver or hammered finishes in sizes 1 , 2 and 3. These spoons have been in the money in the Bi State Shad Contest and are used by several guides and riverrats on the Delaware River. Many satisfied and repeat customers have purchased my spoons. 100 fish days are not uncommon during the peak of the run on these spoons. $1.50 each or $15 a bakers dozen. I ship pout daily and accept PayPal, money order or personal check for payment. I can be reached via email @ ingramk134@gmail.com or on Facebook MarketPlace under American Shad Spoons as well. You can send me a PM for what you would like via Facebook Messenger. Thanks for your patronage and see you on the river. Kevin Ingram, 36 year member and volunteer DRSFA.

Dennis, I use Mustad gold hooks #2 #37363 for all of my spoon making. Been making these for many years. I use flux and dip the eye of the hook in the flux before I solder the hook to the spoon. This insures a good weld to the spoon. Hope this helps.... Thanks, Kevin, 36 year member and volunteer DRSFA

I found an answer to my own question. Go to this link. Excellent explanation what you need and how to do it. https://www.plumislandsurfcasters.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Flutterspoon-Making-Process-1.pdf

KOMAR: So either the Freshwater Digest has made an error in stating the need for the registration so promimently while omitting the word TIDAL (freshwaters) or a new regulation has come into play but the registry page has not been updated to reflect it. Perhaps Mr. Tarlowe can discover which is which and knows someone who can have the correction made to the publication which is in error.
Dennis Scholl | Hellertown | Thursday January 28th 10:54 am
Hi.Can anyone tell me what style and model # hook is used in flutter spoons. I'd like gold-plated. Thanks.
komar | sussex | Thursday January 28th 9:26 am
I have an e-mail from Paul Tarlowe Wildlife Ed. Specialist with NJ Fish and Game stating that only if you are fishing tidal waters is when you need to register not in fresh waters of the Delaware that are non tidal. Go to NJ.GOV/DEP/SaltwaterRegistry/index.htm#who for information. This is the site he sent me.
