Trying to get a hold of a Shad fisherman who goes by WG. Would love to talk Shad fishing with WG. Ever since woofish.com is gone, I've been wanting to share some info. with him. Have been fishing the same haunts as he for years. Got some "reel" questions and thoughts about Deer Creek specifically and what's happening there. Please, contact me WG. My email is wvwhitetailhunter@yahoo.com Thanks. Fish often, and be happy.

HI WG glad you are catching shad. They are lowering level in Kerr lake that is why Roanoke river is so high. I may not come down to nc , this year if Weldon stays high,I usually fish 3rd week of march. VA may be fishing well by then. tight lines ken.

2/28/19 Fishing Report - Cashie RIver North Carolina - I was able to get out a couple hours last Thursday on the Cashie River and caught a few hickory shad. Water temp 49 degrees and river high but not muddy. The nearby Tar and Roanoke are in flood stage and unfishable muddy conditions. The shad have been caught in NC since second week in January, and usually right now begins the peak catching time, but the massive flooding will prevent fishermen from catching them until the water recedes. I will be back again next weekend to give it another try. We need a little warm spell here to catch those early runners. Water temp has to get above 40 to have a shot at them....

Folks I stand with my original response, these fish can run the river 3 to 5 times and then they die. I have been doing this for 53 years. I have seen this up front and personal.
Fish on,

bow fishing IS LEGAL for shad in Jersey waters, not in Penna or NY waters of Delaware river I standcorrected.

Saturday June 9th 8:57 am
Unlike Pacific salmon, not all shad die after spawning. However, it is believed that half or more perish in the Delaware because the spawning run is a long, difficult journey and high energy is exerted. Shad that survive will swim downstream very soon after spawning (these shad are referred to as "downrunners"). According to The Founding Fish author John McPhee, fewer than ten percent of the downrunners in the Delaware River will return another year to spawn again.

Well, Kurt, I don't think warden would care much this time of the season, the fish has spawned out and ready to die, I would condemn the violators anyway

Tuesday June 5th 4:18 pm
I don't know if bowhunting is legal for shad. The limit used to be 5 or 6 for fishermen. Then the limit was cut back when the runs took a downturn in the late 90's. In the last seven or eight years, the numbers of shad have rebounded nicely. Size is still down a little, but getting better.

I wonder how the 3 fish limit pertains to bow shooting guys, they are a game fish with a 3 limit per day.

GAP Area |
Monday June 4th 10:42 am
loads of shad above GAP area, they look spawn out, not taking anything, beach or boat, channel or shallows. A few ppl were bowfishing shad, prolly the only good technique this time of the season :)

Fished at Smithfield on Sunday and had a good day. All colors worked pretty well. Landed 39 and lost 5 at the boat, and had a few quick releases on downriggers. Lots of fish surfacing all day long. Not many boats out, which made it even more peaceful. I'm finished with shad for the season and will be switching over for bass. Tight lines!

As a follow-up to my earlier post, I saw some good action in Easton today. I saw people catching on both sides of the river near the confluence with the Lehigh, both on shore and from boat. I hooked 8, landing 4 of them, all on darts from shore.

Got out a guest of the clubs fishing donation finally, Graig and his son/Daughter had a great time with 33 fish in the boat and lost about 6. yes lots of fish smacking at the lures and getting foul hooked, shore guys were also catching in the Easton area. guys try the dart with a small spoon dropper, with a slow retrieve, it works ,got one more trip to get out and this month should still have fish in the area. Tuesday May 29th 8:38 pm
Fished above the Gap on Saturday, Monday , and Tuesday (today 5-29).
water receding each day. Stained but def fishable.
Saturday had a dozen on spoons.
Monday had 42 with most on spoons and a few on small darts.
Tuesday had 25 had more on darts today than spoons.
Sure seems like there is a lot of spawning activity going on all day, but most fish still felt pretty solid .

Fished Smithfield today and had a decent day. Hooked 23, landed 20. Different colors all worked. Best time was from 11:30 am to 1:45 pm.
Water was high, stained, but pretty clean. Not much mess on the spoons. Tons of fish surfacing all day, and good average size caught.

Fished north of gap 4:45-7:30 on Thurs. Water way up, moving pretty fast, still and very discolored. Thought it was gonna be just casting practice, but hooked up on first cast and hooked 6 landed only 4 as they used the current well and couldn't get 2 nice Roe in. Also hooked a nice little spike striper. So I'm gonna guess you're still gonna be catching them for another week or 2 in Milford Dingman's Gap area due to all the rain keeping the water up and cool.

spoon painting |
Wednesday May 23rd 7:10 pm
I stay away from vinyl paints on all my jigs It reacts to too many things and can make a nasty mess of a tackle box..
For spoons I having been using testors model paint for over 25 years.
I also base coat white, then one coat of what ever colors I want to use after that dries.
If you use powder on spoons , you need to use a heat gun with variable heat, it allows a better heat without melting the solder.

Shadbobo...I use the vinyl jig and lure paint. Not crazy about it but it gives good color. If you get that make sure you get some of the thinner too. I put down two coats of white before the color to get the brightest color and then finish it with a clear coat that has some sparkle in it. I do use some Testors model paint for the odd colors I can't get in vinyl. I put two coats of color on my spoons as well. You'll see the difference between one or two coats yourself. You can't be in a hurry.
