I had the dilemma of deciding fish for shad although only for at most 70 minutes, or go straight home tonight so I figured an hour of casting for shad was better than an hour of NOT casting for shad. I was a little north of Gap, a buddy did get 3 there in morning but still it's a bit early for the big surge. Still - I had vision of hooking AT LEAST 6 shad in that short session, but other than 2 legitimate "bumps" - zilch. I have a very accurate stream thermometer. It consistently reads 3.5 degrees less than my fish-finder on my boat. I trust the old fashion mercury over digital. It read 48 degrees. Rocks are coated with green slime and had to clean in-line sinker and dart after every cast. How reliable are all your thermometers?

I drove down to Deer Creek today. No fish seen at Stafford Bridge and no one fishing. Drove to the pumping station and no one fishing there. I threw a few casts and got nothing. Wen to the mouth and saw only 4 fellows fishing. Saw one hickory caught in 10 minutes. Drove to Fishermans Park. Some generation was going on at 50,000 cfs but saw nothing caught. Maybe in a few more days. This was all between noon and 2 pm today.

Nice going Dave & Rusty. I couldn't make it early, and had to leave early. Sop, I missed the big bite. Oh, well; it's early, and I'll get on them soon.

Yes, Joseph C., I agree. Reports need to give boat or shore, number of anglers, and number of lures being fished, as well as hours fished. Withholding any of this information makes it impossible to determine if the fishing is poor, mediocre, good, or super good. WG gives his reports this way so they are really meaningful. Many others include some but not all pertinent information. Most often omitted is the number of lures being fished. General location such as mid Bucks (or whatever) county is also useful without being spot burning.

I can't tell from the posts how many of those reporting catches are fishing from shore.
Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks!

Fished Sunday with Rusty Balls. Had my first fish of the season at 6:15 when it was almost dark yet. Did ok the first couple of hours. From 10-2 it totally shut down. We started picking at them again and quit at 5:00 with 17. One small pod came through that had some nice roe in it. We landed three 5 pounders back to back. Water was 51 when we left. Had more on the DR's than the plug poles. Considering how little everybody was catching we did pretty good.

Fishing Report 4/7/19 - I fished the Susquehanna river 2 hours from 530-730 PM casting double dart rig from shore and landed 14 hickory shad, 1 American and 1 SEB Striper.....12 of the 14 hickory shad were extremely plump females, again much larger than average....water temp finally rising into the mid-50's and good color.

Fishing Report - 4/6/19 Fished the Potomac at Fletchers Boathouse for the first time after hearing about it for a long time. The water temps (in my opinion) were still al little cold so I decided to do some exploring..... Fished from the bank using double cart rig along with a friend. I fished from 645 am and it was literally a hit on every cast for first two hours of light! I quit at 12:15 PM after landing my 101st HICKORY shad...the American shad supposedly will show up in another week of so. The run of hickories this year is incredible in both numbers and size, with many fish exceeding two pounds and 16-18 inches (which is a big hickory!) I'm hoping the American shad are equally as big and numerous when the bite gets good in the Delaware. This warming trend is going to improve the bite and shad will be caught way above the Water Gap......Hows that one Carl? haha

Been doing good between frenchtown and wash xing. 15 or so each time we went out so far this year mostly roe so far a few buck mixed in. Remember to flatten the barb on your hooks for ez hook removal and less mortality. Remember Shad lives matter!!!

way south (for me) |
Sunday April 7th 8:10 pm
My first shad report and trip of season. Made the long ass drive south to launch boat in New Hope area. Saw a few boats catching here and there. Water temp 47.5 to start at 11am. Quit at 3:30 water temp 49. Boated 10 of 14 a few decent roe. Very sporadic seemed like when we did get a hit it was a double. The guy that runs charters and floats his anchor in between sessions seemed to do the best but nothing I would call wild action for anyone based on what it 'could' be but it' been a very cold spring once again. I will call it a good start all in all. I thought rock snot was only a north of the Gap problem, but the green slime was real bad and definitely impacts what you want to do.

Sunday April 7th 11:09 am
Fished 3 hours in Riegelsville an only landed one shad. Marked practically nothing on fish finder. I did someone else catch one and that was it. Unbelievable the difference in the amount of fish that were in Frenchtown yesterday and lack of even marking fish in Riegelsville. Frenchtown had a nonstop stream of fish on my sonar. Riegelsville today you could go 20 plus minutes without marking a single fish. Head south if your looking to catch multiple fish. They should be in Riegelsville by midweek.

fished north of trenton for 4 hours starting at 11am today. Started in one of our better deeper spots and moved to another shallow spot after striking out on the first. Water temp about 46 at start and up to 48 when leaving at 3:30. 1st time out this year and only caught 1 roe but was a nice first fish of the season at 4-10. Just wondering if I should have stayed shallower or in deeper channels. This fish came out of about 6' of water. We had four rods out all day but also had to clean the $#^&^(^ out of them constantly. Any ideas for this novice??? or is it just a temperature thing???? Tight lines!! Shawn

Hey guys an gals, Hoping many fisherman and women will try crimping the barb on their hooks fishing for shad, it makes it so easy to come out of fish with just a swist of the hook, been barbless for 31 years now and no problem getting them to the shore or boat. this will also help eliminate some of the bleeding once hooked, use longer shanked hooks for less deep hookups. this is your way of trying to conserve the shad.

Casted from shore for about a half hour this afternoon. Hooked up and had an EPIC battle on my trout rod, only to lose the shad at my feet due to equipment failure. My in-line swivel broke. At least I know my knots are good! So if anybody catches a shad with an orange and yellow spoon and 3/8oz lews in its jaw I would like it back. Thank you

Fishing report 3/26-3/30-had a work schedule last week driving to North Carolina and South Carolina (from pa.) so I was able to stop at several locations in both states. 3/26 I caught 2 American shad at the Neuse River NC below the Falls lake dam. 3/27 I fished the Tar River NC in Rocky Mount for 1.5 hours and landed 9 Americans and 1 hickory shad. 3/28 and 3/29 I fished the Santee Cooper rediversion canal at St Stevens SC and landed 20 + American shad in about 2 hours before dark both evenings... they were about half spawned out and half fresh, predominantly roes In the 4/4+ Weight range, which are BIG for southern shad! Started driving home on 3/30 and stopped at the Tar River again, landing 6 American shad but losing 15 or more others...fish were hitting strange and spitting the dart? Stopped at a tributary of the Susquehanna River in the evening on 3/30, and caught several hickory shad, the first “local” shad I have caught this year.... the hickories are definitely on the big side as well... looks like a good year in the ocean feeding and surviving. All shad caught on double dart rigs, 1/4 oz with 1/16 ox trailer... color does NOT matter!
