Is the Susky fishable right now ?
RPS | Greeley | Monday May 6th 9:17 am
Shad Harris ya last night was the best this season. ZG is always good when the Del. is rising and muddy it pushes the shad to the shore where the cleaner water from the Lackawaxen dumps in and they just hang there.
ShadHarris | Work | Monday May 6th 7:49 am
RPS - sounds like you had that epic session I am still waiting for this season. Well done. I judge shad by how many hookups per hour. Gray shad fishing is 10-14 an hour and insane is 15 plus an hour. 5 to 10 is decent. Less than 5 is poor. I think I have seen a few decent sessions but the rest have been poor. Yesterday near gap got 1 in one hour then decided to go trout fishing instead. Good call as I got over 40 trout including a beautiful colorful 19” rainbow.

TeamToothy | Northampton | Saturday May 4th 4:40 pm
It’s lookong like a rain-out here in Easton area tomorrow. How’s the water level looking in Portland/Lackawaxen areas? P.S. Hit 5 in Easton Thursday night and lost a few more. Red and white 1/8oz darts from shore.
Phil M. | Sandyston | Saturday May 4th 3:45 pm
I noticed there are some darts being sold these days that are not on specs. The barb or snell is very undersized and does not protrude very far from the hook shank. If you are not landing a decent percentage of hook-ups, this may be the reason. The barb can be bent out further with a pen knife or pair of dikes, if this is the case. It is not realistic to expect to be able to land a high percentage of fish that can be 6lbs. or more with some of the inferior darts I have seen out there. I realize there are some Puritans among us who bend the barbs flat so as not to injure the fish, and I respect that. But those are the facts.
Russ Van | Belvidere | Saturday May 4th 11:55 am
Belvidere boat launch area this morning. Guy 15' away from me had fun. Me? not so much. I'll get there. Man had his grandson there, got his first shad... right where I was fishing. He gave me some darts, I was using the wrong stuff. Still great being out there seeing fish, and 4 HUGE geese that kind of looked at you like they were going to take you out, and I don't mean on a date. So i went to the Pophandusing Creek and got a bunch of trout on little mepps spinners. Kind of like fishing in a K-Mart fish department, though. You gotta know where they are. And I've been told the herons know. OK. that's it. Got a friend that does very well by Zane Grey, but he's one of those guys that can catch fish out of cup of coffee in the morning....

Any readers on the water this morning? Conditions? Muddy? Stained? Water temp?
ShadHarris | Gap area | Friday May 3rd 10:07 pm
not wild action tonight from 5pm to 7:15pm, but decent. I landed 8 my buddy landed 11. He lost about 3, but I had so many more hookups that got off (like 10) but still contributed to the action. i was using 6lb braid on my rod with a spoon, 6lb p-line on rod with dart, and most that I missed were on the braid. Half my fish landed was on 1/32 ounce pink head dart, the others on orange-black-silver spoon including all the dropped fish. My buddy got one on same dart rest of his on same spoon, but he was using 6lb trilene on both his rods. Definitely seeing an improvement in river conditions and action. Water was 52-53. Nothing compared to last 3-4 years though. River still 2 feet higher than "normal" but quite fishable overall compared to the past month.
Whitetail | Shohola | Friday May 3rd 8:59 pm
Action very good today. Super slow retrieve triggered the strikes although that contributed to numerous misses. Warmer temp should lead to harder hits. Some jumbo roe in the mix.
RPS | Greeley | Friday May 3rd 8:00 pm
Fished Zane Grey boat launch from shore tonight 5 - 6 pm hooked 10 landed 9 water temp.53 deg. used double dart rig top green 1/4 oz bottom white 1/32 oz.

I managed 5 shad in 3 hours down in Bushkill. I know it's not huge numbers, but I got a feel for a new spot. The bonus was stopping by another spot and talking with Bill F. I got a few more tips from his 30 years of shad fishing and I wanted to give him another thanks here.
Franke | Morris County NJ | Friday May 3rd 9:39 am
Hi - been a LOT of years since I’ve fished Shad. When is the big run in the Delaware? Best spots for action? Bringing young son for his first experience. What pound line and what bait/rig setup is time tested for success? Many thanks all - such a wonderful forum. Fish your bass off! Frankie

Joseph C, which side of the Art Museum? I fished opposite side of it tonight (by I-76) for a bit and got nothing but the tide was really low. Low tide was 7:30 pm. I fished 5 pm to 6:30 pm.
Brian | Barryville | Thursday May 2nd 10:30 pm
Thanks James L. We pulled into town tonight so we’ll see how it goes. Coming from VT it feels pretty darn warm to us! Looking forward to fishing regardless. It’s been great fun to watch the board with the boys. Takes me back a few decades.
Brody | Ny | Thursday May 2nd 7:18 pm
James L. - yeah ill be out on the water not from shore thanks for the heads up tho ill fish toward the nj side. Hopefully the weather holds out
James L | Shohola, PA | Thursday May 2nd 8:09 am
Brody - Don't fish Milford Beach for shad, they run the far side of the river there. You can hike in from the NJ side without issue. Brian - The water has been cold up here. Fishing is starting to pick up, and should be good by the weekend. Water temperature was still 48 last night in Sparrow Bush.
Joseph C. | Phoenixville, PA | Thursday May 2nd 7:45 am
Another good couple of hours fishing by the Art Museum on the majestic Schuylkill River yesterday afternoon. In less than 2 hours I landed 8 bucks and one 6lb (damn big, but I don't have an actual scale) roe. No hickories. I used a flutter spoon, which is unusual for me. Also interesting was that the River herring, which had not been at all visible the day before, were going berserk with their mating activities up along the rocks. ----- Now I'm looking forward to getting back to the Delaware, and maybe bringing home one or two for my annual shad feast.
RPS | Greeley | Wednesday May 1st 8:01 pm

Brian | | Wednesday May 1st 7:18 pm
Thanks Linedog. That might explain why there was no answer when I called the other day. I guess I’ll work out a back up plan... any good fishing up that far yet?
Linedog | | Wednesday May 1st 6:53 pm
Hey Brian, the Barryville Sportsman may not be open ? Stopped there last Monday was closed. May want to call there.Kinda appeared no activity there for awhile
Peter Lee | Malvern PA | Wednesday May 1st 6:07 pm
For Joseph C: Fished well below Conowingo yesterday afternoon 04/30 for about 3 hours. Fish spoons with a fly rod. Landed 9 hickories and lost a few. THe perch are there in force and a bucket full is easy with a jig tipped with a worm. Once the perch guys show up it is difficult to target shad in the lower river. Conowingo was still in "spill" so I did not fish the top. I may make another trip to Conowingo but I will probably focus on the Delaware.
Brian | Barryville, NY | Wednesday May 1st 5:34 pm
I'm bringing my boys to Barryville, NY this weekend to try our luck at the shad run. It's been almost 30 years since I fished there with my grandfather. Hoping to have some luck. Anyone have any spots they can recommend? We will be fishing Friday - Sunday. Picking up our licenses at The Barryville Sportsman!
Brody | Ny | Wednesday May 1st 9:07 am
Antone have any luck in the Milford beach - dingmans ferry area? -thanks
Joseph C. | Phoenixville, PA | Wednesday May 1st 7:26 am
I tried the Schuylkill yesterday and was happy I did, mostly. I caught 3 different Alosa family fish in abut 10 casts, and ended up with 4 for 6 on non-herring bites. The last hooked fish beat me up pretty well: it hit close in and proceeded to rip drag, screaming straight down stream, hugging the bank. As I maneuvered to get an angle around some shoreline debris I fell on the rocks, broke my rod tip off, banged up my reel's bail, and somehow snapped my line.************* I went up to the fish ladder where a maintenance crew was working and was able to look down into the flow. There were dozens of shad making their way up, and at one quieter bend I could see 3 massive catfish, maybe 15 to 20 lbs each, swimming like defensive linemen. Clearly they could eat anything they wanted.
Kevin | Yardley PA | Tuesday April 30th 9:54 pm
Caught 7 today in 51 degree water. River is still high and moving. Heavy stainless and lot of debris. All roe except 1 buck. Org/ chartreuse spoons in 9 ft of water. Temp rose to 53 by 330pm. One double..sporadic action today.
RPS | Greeley | Tuesday April 30th 9:02 pm
Fished Zane Grey launch from shore 5 - 8 pm hooked 15 landed 10 water temp. 50 deg. water still high but coming down good if it doesn't rain to heavy again.
Joseph C. | Phoenixville, PA | Tuesday April 30th 7:44 am
Fjp110, I guess that with the various shads, the herring and the white perch, all those spawning stripers don't have to work too hard for a meal. I'd love to catch white perch like that, and have been after them as a first target of the late winter and early spring for years - with no success. The Conowingo is 1:20 from my house, and just too far to go in the wrong direction for me. Thanks for your report.
Joseph C. | Phoenixville, PA | Tuesday April 30th 7:32 am
I tried below Lambertville at noontime for an hour yesterday. Nada. A couple other guys there caught even less, almost. If things pan out, I will try the Schuylkill by the Fairmount Dam around midday, for the top of the tide today.
Fjp110 | 19464 | Monday April 29th 8:10 pm
I fished Conowingo today. About 10 yards downstream of the concreate steps. 9am-noon and caught 20 hickorys. Only a couple after noon. The real highlight was the white perch. They were there in huge numbers. I caught over 60 on my shady rigs. Some were really nice sized ones too. Fished an 1/8oz dart and a silver Nungesser spoon.
RPS | Greeley | Monday April 29th 7:54 pm
Fished Zane Grey boat launch from shore 3 - 5:30 pm hooked 5 landed 3 then rod broke . That ended my fishing for the night. Water temp. 49 deg.
Randy | Shoemakersville | Monday April 29th 3:53 pm
Rcrusty thank you for your response,I respect the posted signs there and anywhere so I guess I’ll have to find a new shore spot. Too bad because I had a lot of luck shad fishing in that area.
Rcrusty | Pa. | Monday April 29th 10:22 am
Randy, there is a couple hundred miles of the Susquehanna that anglers are denied access to because of the railroad in MD. and PA. You enter at your risk. If they see you they will prosecute.
Joseph C. | Phoenixville, PA | Monday April 29th 7:58 am
Russ Van, no worries! You'll have to work a LOT harder than that to start us grumbling here. We tend to be a very positive group.
Jason | | Monday April 29th 7:46 am
I had meant to say Smelt. It was def a Smelt, not an Alewife or Herring. I would have taken a pic but I felt bad for the little fella
ShadHarris | worthington | Sunday April 28th 10:16 pm
Held off fishing last night and this morning, but headed over to a good spot N of gap with the boat, marked a ton of fish, but water is now down to 48 and could not get one hit in 3 hours and that was enough. Called in a buddy to come down from Smithfield to anchor alongside me and he was marking them heavy too, and no hits for him either. Visibility less than a foot, but debris not too bad. And that's how my annual Bi-State Tournament experience shall end! Hope this seemingly perpetual rain cloud we have been under for a year can give us a few weeks without rain!
Russ Van | Belvidere | Sunday April 28th 9:48 pm
Stopped by the boat launch around 7 ish PM. No good reports. One guy fished for 12 hours, I think he told me he got 1 near the end of that. Wow! Also, noone on the Pequest for trout on Saturday morning between 519 and the Delaware. River too high and the wind was awful. Newbie here? But I want to try that stretch in the chasm below Rt 46 down whatever that road is..... nice stretch of water.... too fast right now. Hey, not sure about posting conditions other than shad on here. SORRY.... should I be doing this somewhere else? Just moved here, loving it.... just want to do things right and not tick anyone off..... let me know...
| | Sunday April 28th 8:17 pm
Jason...there r two kinds of herring in the river alewife and blueback...that could be your anchovy?...or possible rainbow smelt which are actually considerd rcently "extinct" in the river as a result of warmer average temps etc
Rich Fasanello | Washington, NJ | Sunday April 28th 5:17 pm
Hi Dennis, maybe we can meet up some day. Its been too long. My number is listed.
Dennis Scholl | Hellertown | Sunday April 28th 5:00 pm
I've been reading the comments from the past few days. I've been unable to get out because of work schedule. Last year I didn't get out at all. Two comments: Jason, you did not catch an anchovy; it might have been an alewife. Anchovies do not leave salt water. Second comment: Shad Harris, you must have the legs of a bull to put in a 12-hour shift from shore. Yikes! I don't know that your comparisons to other years are fair at this point in time considering the absolutely crummy fishing conditions we've had so far. I'd wait a bit to size up this year compared to others. Next year i will be retired so maybe I can actually post that I caught a fish. CJcarlino's shad is really nice! Good luck, everyone.
Randy | Shoemakersville | Sunday April 28th 2:57 pm
I recently drove to the Portland area to shore fish and found that the area is posted by the railroad company. My question is do they allow fishermen to walk in or do they enforce the trespass signs? Thanks in advance!
Cjcarlino | Port jervis | Sunday April 28th 10:30 am
Lost track around a dozen friday. 13-15 fish landed few hooks popped and a few small mouth and walleyes in the mix. Good pushes of fish migrating up every 15 minutes or so
Joseph C. | Phoenixville, PA | Sunday April 28th 9:00 am
I think I'll be fishing in the parking lot. Larger offerings and darker colors. Thanks for the good advice, RW.
