ShadRoe | NJ | Thursday March 21st 8:23 am
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: If you are planning on releasing your fish, please do not drag it onto dry rocks where it will loose scales, etc. Fish should be released either by holding them against your waders -- while still in the water -- or easing them into shallow water until they are on their sides. Or use a rubberized landing net. Do not hold them by the gills and especially DO NOT hold them behind the head pinching the fragile gill plates, which can easily rupture. Also, mash down the barbs on your darts, spoons, flies. Let's do everything we can to conserve this great fishery! I hope everyone has a great shad season!

Went 6 for 7 between 1000 & 1300 hours today. A decent class of fish ran thru my spot during the period. Landed 5 roe all 3# and above and one average buck. One roe probably went 4#, but I wasn't going to wade back upstream to put a 4 pounder on the boga. Water temp 40.8 when I caught my first 3.5# fish in pic. The afternoon was a dead as my previous 6 trips for the year had been. The best I can say is that I caught the first roe that I know of this year. A fishing buddy of mine got a buck last Friday. "When they are there, they're there. When they're not, they're not". PS I might have hit double digits before the bite ended, but I had to pick up my 6 weight and try to score one while they were there. The shooting head that worked in the same spot last year at the same water height was hanging the bottom on every cast. Basically, an exercise in futility. Pretty day though, for March!

WG | | Thursday March 14th 10:54 pm
Fishing report 3/14/19 fished one and a half hours late afternoon in the bucks county section of the Delaware River. Water surprisingly on the lower side and very clear. Not a hit ... water at least mid 40s... the shad are here regardless of the catches... warm rain tomorrow maybe will help the bite....
George | | Monday March 11th 11:25 am
That's probably why Rich did not say the shad would be on time, but that the bite would be on time.
WG | | Monday March 11th 8:24 am
It’s March 11 guys! Shad have been pushing through the lower river for a couple weeks at this point, however with temps still in the 30’s it’s slmost impossible to get them to hit... there should be some hooked this week as temps moderate. I’ll be trying mid week. The shad are always on time btw, and have been for millions of years..... a little cold water isn’t stopping them
Rustyballstackle | | Sunday March 10th 6:13 pm

JD | Bethlehem | Friday March 8th 9:20 pm
Rich, what do you consider on time?
Rich | | Friday March 8th 8:58 pm
If (In)accuweather is correct in the latest long-range- - - mid -Delaware -River region - - - forecast, the rest of March should have near normal temps as opposed to the 5 to 15 degrees below normal we have been subjected to since January. If so, there is hope for the bite to be on time.

Trying to get a hold of a Shad fisherman who goes by WG. Would love to talk Shad fishing with WG. Ever since woofish.com is gone, I've been wanting to share some info. with him. Have been fishing the same haunts as he for years. Got some "reel" questions and thoughts about Deer Creek specifically and what's happening there. Please, contact me WG. My email is wvwhitetailhunter@yahoo.com Thanks. Fish often, and be happy.
kenneth kerstetter | VA. | Wednesday March 6th 9:47 am
HI WG glad you are catching shad. They are lowering level in Kerr lake that is why Roanoke river is so high. I may not come down to nc , this year if Weldon stays high,I usually fish 3rd week of march. VA may be fishing well by then. tight lines ken.
WG | Eastern North Carolina - Cashie River | Monday March 4th 10:51 am
2/28/19 Fishing Report - Cashie RIver North Carolina - I was able to get out a couple hours last Thursday on the Cashie River and caught a few hickory shad. Water temp 49 degrees and river high but not muddy. The nearby Tar and Roanoke are in flood stage and unfishable muddy conditions. The shad have been caught in NC since second week in January, and usually right now begins the peak catching time, but the massive flooding will prevent fishermen from catching them until the water recedes. I will be back again next weekend to give it another try. We need a little warm spell here to catch those early runners. Water temp has to get above 40 to have a shot at them....

Folks I stand with my original response, these fish can run the river 3 to 5 times and then they die. I have been doing this for 53 years. I have seen this up front and personal. Fish on, Jim V

Many dead floaters for over a week now.
warden | bville,nj | Monday June 11th 12:06 pm
bow fishing IS LEGAL for shad in Jersey waters, not in Penna or NY waters of Delaware river I standcorrected.
| | Saturday June 9th 8:57 am
Unlike Pacific salmon, not all shad die after spawning. However, it is believed that half or more perish in the Delaware because the spawning run is a long, difficult journey and high energy is exerted. Shad that survive will swim downstream very soon after spawning (these shad are referred to as "downrunners"). According to The Founding Fish author John McPhee, fewer than ten percent of the downrunners in the Delaware River will return another year to spawn again. https://www.state.nj.us/drbc/edweb/american-shad.html
| | Wednesday June 6th 10:39 pm
Guys these are not salmon they run the river 3 to 5 times before they die.
Nick S | Gap | Wednesday June 6th 10:29 pm
Well, Kurt, I don't think warden would care much this time of the season, the fish has spawned out and ready to die, I would condemn the violators anyway
