Kept a close eye on the weather and picked this past week to shad fish. Monday-Friday, 40 hours of fishing from shore, New Hope to Yardley and I threw the kitchen sink at em. Ended the week with 1 American and 5 Hickory (plus a big walleye). Maybe 2 legit bumps. Didn't even scale one. The few spots I fish have been super productive over the past many years but usually the water is quite a bit higher. It's definitely still a tad cold but for me the level is more important than water temp because I've caught them like gangbusters with numb hands and feet...if they were holding in these pools I would have felt them.

Warden: We were at neither of those places.
ShadHarris | North of Water Gap | Friday April 12th 7:48 pm
I should clarify 49 degree water Monday, two bumps but no hookups. 46.5 degree water tonight and one bump, no hookups.
ShadHarris | North of Water Gap | Friday April 12th 7:36 pm
extremely disappointed to find the river up a little bit from Monday afternoon when I got 49 degree water and "two" legit bumps, and water temp down to 46.5. Water flowing clear but choked with floating pieces of algae all through the water column. Had to clean line every single cast. About the time the line would start to swing into that 45 degree angle where I expect to hook up, could feel line loading up with scum. Inline sinker catches most of it but some gets on the dart or spoon (my only bump was on a spoon). Regardless of the scum - if the water was several degrees warmer still think would have had a good bite. I was expecting lower water and at least 50 based on weather since Monday - I guess the wildcard is the reservoirs up north letting out frigid water and from what may are saying - the dreaded green slime with it!
Warden | B-ville | Friday April 12th 5:30 pm
Phil where you guys at the Mongap or Lackawax this week?

SHAD HARRIS, shad have been using the Paulinskill river up to the now removed dam for decades and these fish traveled no farther up the Delaware so no siphoning off of the Delaware River fishery above the Paulinskill is expected. A similar situation exists on the Musconetkong River which is scheduled for another dam removal at Bloomsbury this summer. Runs up the Bushkill and other tributaries have been noticed. Shad are not as strict at homing onto their natal rivers as are salmon and steelhead and other searun trouts. This is best expressed in the phenomenon of west coast shad (and striped bass) stocked in the Sacremento system now found up to British Columbia. All that would be need to begin a tributary population is for some shad to be spawned at the mouth of a tributary. They would home onto that water when they return and travel as far up as the situation allows. It will. as you have pointed out, increase the total fishery by adding spawning / nursery areas.

Definably go with a guide. There are some awesome guides down in your area. Check with Rustyballs. If he can't take you he knows a lot of the people who can. The guys in this club are great and will help you when ever they can.
ShadHarris | not on the river - yet | Friday April 12th 2:14 pm
Got some really AWESOME news today from a friend who was trout fishing the Paulinskill in Blairstown. He caught a SHAD on a spinner! The Columbia Dam removal has INSTANT impact on the fishery. While it may siphon off "some" fish that now will not be caught at the gap, Bushkill, Dinman's, PJ, etc - it just opens up more and more waters for them to spawn and thrive. Also opened up a new "feeding tube" for the Muskie's to get access to some fresh trout! LOL
Keith Karn | TBD | Friday April 12th 1:33 pm
Thanks Komar. We are based near Philly, but can drive a bit for good fishing. That's why I put "TBD" in for location. ;-) I'm just trying to decide if the canoe buys us anything over shore fishing. Maybe accessing places the shore casters can't reach.... It is a bit of a production to ferry the canoe back to put-in, etc. with a drift trip... Also, would you recommend going out with a guide for initial learning experience?
Phil M. | Sandyston | Friday April 12th 11:04 am
Shad Harris, We were fishing where a good sized stream comes in from the NY side and basically throwing the lures completely across the "junction pool" and dropping them on top of the seam between the main Delaware River and the other side of the junction pool. When we were able to reach the main Delaware current. we often came back with snot on the swivel and hooks, so we stopped throwing them into the main Delaware current and dropped the lures on the seam instead. Matter of fact, you could see a difference in water color right at the seam. The big D was running a brownish-green color and the water we retrieved through was clear. Kastmasters stay pretty much at the level you let them sink to and come straight in unless you slow the retrieve WAY down. I still managed to lose 2 of them, though. But there is no doubt that if we had to fish the main Delaware, we would have been frustrated with snot on almost every cast. The tackle combo we used would be considered a mismatch, but when you can throw the lure around 300 feet, who cares?
Komar | Vernon | Friday April 12th 9:15 am
Keith I don't know where you are out of but Milford beach and Dingmans Ferry are a couple of good areas for canoes. Both areas can be fished right off of the launch areas. Keep trying you will get them. Tight lines
ShadHarris | not on the river | Friday April 12th 8:53 am
Phil that's a great (and very believable) report. Thanks for sharing. I know you routinely catch shad on the Kastmasters - not something I have tried. Doesn't surprise me at all fish are that far north. How was the green slime? Catching much on the lines and lures?
Keith | TBD | Friday April 12th 8:02 am
Hi Guys. My kids and I are new to shad fishing. We tried for the first time at this point last year, and haven't hooked one yet. We have canoes, but not a boat / motor. Any suggestions for shore or canoe fishing locations, techniques, etc. are appreciated.
Phil M. | Sandyston | Friday April 12th 12:37 am
Guys, the shad are all up and down the river. They just haven't been hitting much because the water has stayed under 50 degrees. Today my friend and I hooked 11 of them from the shoreline, landed only 6, but we were 20 miles above Port Jervis. Yeah, really. None were taken on darts because we were having so much success throwing 1/4 ounce, orange/silver Kastmasters from 4lb. line. Was I surprised? You're damn right I was. They were hitting during the warmest part of the day, when the sun came out. I can only conclude from this that they're just looking for some warmer water before the big scores start rolling in. We were using a pumping, start/stop retrieve and they were goaded by that. You may have to duck the rain that is soon to come, but if you can do that, the warmer temps should bust things wide open.
Paul | Yardley | Thursday April 11th 8:32 pm
Caught my our first shad this year at Washington crossing bride. Fished there for about an hour around 4pm by boat 2 people. Water was 53 degree Had 2 rods with dart/spoons and caught the shad on the other heavier rod with a clam.... Not what I expected, but it was a nice fish.

Eric fished Easton Wednesday and had about 40 in 5-6 hrs Good luck
Jim | Easton | Thursday April 11th 8:20 am
Any action in Easton area
| | Tuesday April 9th 1:21 pm
Is anyone getting any in the Smithfield area /
Phil M. | Sandyston | Tuesday April 9th 11:47 am
Shad Harris: I had occasion to take the water temp on Monday and your 48 degree reading was exactly the same as my verified mercury thermometer. I would add that I never take water temp in shallow, sunlit water, and always in the current.
WG | | Tuesday April 9th 10:37 am
Fishing report 4/8/19- fished 2 locations today, 1.5 hours casting from shore in bucks county pa on the Delaware River, I was 2/3 (one buck one small roe) and the Vintage Fisherman got 4. All on double dart rig. This was early am. I then afternoon fished 2-4 in the Susquehanna River with “medium” flow water around 4 small and 3 large units (50k ccs?) and landed 36 hickory shad. No one fishing when I got there, few guys showed up later..... definitely slowed down as day progressed with predominantly bucks. My son fished 530-730 slightly downstream and landed 23 hickory and one small striper. We both noticed we lost a lot of fish by them throwing the hooks....that seemed to happen when a small front was approaching and it got cloudy and later rained. Water temp was reported at 55 in the evening . Had some time
Capt. Dave | | Tuesday April 9th 7:34 am
When guys are talking about DR's (downriggers), diving plugs and FF (fish finders) they're fishing from a boat.
ShadHarris | Gap area | Monday April 8th 9:43 pm
I had the dilemma of deciding fish for shad although only for at most 70 minutes, or go straight home tonight so I figured an hour of casting for shad was better than an hour of NOT casting for shad. I was a little north of Gap, a buddy did get 3 there in morning but still it's a bit early for the big surge. Still - I had vision of hooking AT LEAST 6 shad in that short session, but other than 2 legitimate "bumps" - zilch. I have a very accurate stream thermometer. It consistently reads 3.5 degrees less than my fish-finder on my boat. I trust the old fashion mercury over digital. It read 48 degrees. Rocks are coated with green slime and had to clean in-line sinker and dart after every cast. How reliable are all your thermometers?
Frank Petronio | Mahwah, NJ | Monday April 8th 9:13 pm
Hi all. I have only fished at Water Gap and haven't read of any fish yet. Can someone give me an idea of whereabout they be at right now. Thanks

Finally hit one tonight and lost another wading in Easton.
Mike Ferraro | West Chester, PA | Monday April 8th 7:04 pm
Conowingo I drove down to Deer Creek today. No fish seen at Stafford Bridge and no one fishing. Drove to the pumping station and no one fishing there. I threw a few casts and got nothing. Wen to the mouth and saw only 4 fellows fishing. Saw one hickory caught in 10 minutes. Drove to Fishermans Park. Some generation was going on at 50,000 cfs but saw nothing caught. Maybe in a few more days. This was all between noon and 2 pm today.
Kurt Miller | Northampton, PA | Monday April 8th 5:50 pm
Nice going Dave & Rusty. I couldn't make it early, and had to leave early. Sop, I missed the big bite. Oh, well; it's early, and I'll get on them soon.
George | | Monday April 8th 4:58 pm
Yes, Joseph C., I agree. Reports need to give boat or shore, number of anglers, and number of lures being fished, as well as hours fished. Withholding any of this information makes it impossible to determine if the fishing is poor, mediocre, good, or super good. WG gives his reports this way so they are really meaningful. Many others include some but not all pertinent information. Most often omitted is the number of lures being fished. General location such as mid Bucks (or whatever) county is also useful without being spot burning.
Joseph C. | Phoenixville, PA | Monday April 8th 2:03 pm
I can't tell from the posts how many of those reporting catches are fishing from shore. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!
Capt. Dave | Easton | Monday April 8th 7:30 am
Fished Sunday with Rusty Balls. Had my first fish of the season at 6:15 when it was almost dark yet. Did ok the first couple of hours. From 10-2 it totally shut down. We started picking at them again and quit at 5:00 with 17. One small pod came through that had some nice roe in it. We landed three 5 pounders back to back. Water was 51 when we left. Had more on the DR's than the plug poles. Considering how little everybody was catching we did pretty good.
Mike | Belvidere | Monday April 8th 7:09 am
Hooked 2 bucks Saturday early afternoon just below the boat launch. Red & red/yellow dart.
WG | | Monday April 8th 6:20 am
Fishing Report 4/7/19 - I fished the Susquehanna river 2 hours from 530-730 PM casting double dart rig from shore and landed 14 hickory shad, 1 American and 1 SEB Striper.....12 of the 14 hickory shad were extremely plump females, again much larger than average....water temp finally rising into the mid-50's and good color.
WG | Potomac River | Monday April 8th 6:16 am
Fishing Report - 4/6/19 Fished the Potomac at Fletchers Boathouse for the first time after hearing about it for a long time. The water temps (in my opinion) were still al little cold so I decided to do some exploring..... Fished from the bank using double cart rig along with a friend. I fished from 645 am and it was literally a hit on every cast for first two hours of light! I quit at 12:15 PM after landing my 101st HICKORY shad...the American shad supposedly will show up in another week of so. The run of hickories this year is incredible in both numbers and size, with many fish exceeding two pounds and 16-18 inches (which is a big hickory!) I'm hoping the American shad are equally as big and numerous when the bite gets good in the Delaware. This warming trend is going to improve the bite and shad will be caught way above the Water Gap......Hows that one Carl? haha
eyedeau | | Sunday April 7th 11:13 pm
Been doing good between frenchtown and wash xing. 15 or so each time we went out so far this year mostly roe so far a few buck mixed in. Remember to flatten the barb on your hooks for ez hook removal and less mortality. Remember Shad lives matter!!!
ShadHarris | way south (for me) | Sunday April 7th 8:10 pm
My first shad report and trip of season. Made the long ass drive south to launch boat in New Hope area. Saw a few boats catching here and there. Water temp 47.5 to start at 11am. Quit at 3:30 water temp 49. Boated 10 of 14 a few decent roe. Very sporadic seemed like when we did get a hit it was a double. The guy that runs charters and floats his anchor in between sessions seemed to do the best but nothing I would call wild action for anyone based on what it 'could' be but it' been a very cold spring once again. I will call it a good start all in all. I thought rock snot was only a north of the Gap problem, but the green slime was real bad and definitely impacts what you want to do.
Rusty balls | | Sunday April 7th 7:46 pm
Fished Easton today with Capt Dave Ended the day with 17 A couple of nice roe in the mix It should be on Fire by next weekend
Carl Spatz | | Sunday April 7th 6:56 pm
Why has W.G. been so quiet? I need a good fish story.
James L | Shohola | Sunday April 7th 4:14 pm
Explored a couple spots in Bushkill. Water was still 46 degrees at 1:45. 0 Shad in around 2 hours of fishing.
Tony | Riegelsville | Sunday April 7th 11:09 am
Fished 3 hours in Riegelsville an only landed one shad. Marked practically nothing on fish finder. I did someone else catch one and that was it. Unbelievable the difference in the amount of fish that were in Frenchtown yesterday and lack of even marking fish in Riegelsville. Frenchtown had a nonstop stream of fish on my sonar. Riegelsville today you could go 20 plus minutes without marking a single fish. Head south if your looking to catch multiple fish. They should be in Riegelsville by midweek.
