Shad Harris, Are you fishing from a boat or shore? I know a lot of fisherman don't like to give up their spots, but I would like to know where the shad are up to. I'm going to dingmans tomorrow, are the shad there yet? Thanks
ShadHarris. | The river | Wednesday April 12th 9:00 am
Right back at it this morning to build on last night’s success. Much slower only 4 of 7 in two hours.
ShadHarris | The river | Tuesday April 11th 8:31 pm
Good 2 hour 40 minute session late afternoon. Went 18 of 21 hook ups all on on darts. Small pink and white, small green chartreuse or small candy corn. Really didn’t seem to matter. 3 roe to 4 lbs nothing big. River is right at normal level but is dropping fast. Water temps about 52.
James Leiser | Matamoras | Monday April 10th 8:38 pm
I went 2 for 3 in 3 hours tonight in Matamoras.
Shad Harris | Worthington | Monday April 10th 7:52 pm
Finally got on some shad N of water gap. Latest it took for me to land first shad in many years. Went 6 for 11 on a small short shank spoon. One nice roe the rest bucks. Tried a bit north first but no hits and heading a bit south made the difference. River is about normal level and 50 degrees.
RPS | Greeley | Monday April 10th 7:24 pm

Joseph C. Yes, we met at the Art Museum fish ladder two seasons ago, it may have been last year but my memory on such things is fading too. I do know we talked and you showed me some things and gave me a shad spoon. Thank you for the tips, I may try on more time this week.
Rich | | Sunday April 9th 8:49 pm
As of Friday 04/07 Old Mine Road is open from gap to Millbrook.

1st outing for Shad today. Fished between Bushkill and Milford. No Shad yet. Water seemed to be a bit cold still. Should be just a matter of time. Charles Mc.
RPS | Greeley Pa. | Sunday April 9th 7:06 pm

Joseph C. | Phoenixville, PA / Ewing, NJ | Sunday April 9th 11:30 am
George B, I think I might have met you there before, but my memory for such things was never good and isn't improving with age. That said, I find the best fishing to be when the tide is flowing pretty well. I've fished there for hours around the top of the tide without a bump and had it turn on with a bang as the tide drops to some magic point. Right now the temp is about perfect, I think. It was over 60F on Friday and is hanging at about 58.5 or so now. The last time I was there catching fish the cormorants were all resting on a log hung up on the dam when I got there and were all in the water as I began to get hook ups.
RPS | Greeley Pa. | Saturday April 8th 8:12 am
I'll be there Jim. It was 26 deg. here this morning and the water temp. dropped back to 42 deg. but its supposed to hit 70's and close to 80 later in the week that should turn them on.
Chris S | Delaware Water Gap | Friday April 7th 12:53 pm
Got about 3 hours in at Delaware Water Gap. River is still high and at 49.2*F but there are some shad around. Landed two and missed one. Pink & Chartreuse on poor-mans & dipsys.
Jim Rozas | SI,NY | Friday April 7th 11:07 am
Thanks for the reports Rick. See you on the river soon. Good Luck, Jim
George B | Conshohocken, PA | Thursday April 6th 7:51 pm
I finally made it to the Art Museum today, fished for about 2 hours before high tide. Nothing, nothing happening. It looks like the cormorants are bored too.

Shad the rapper | Bucks county | Wednesday April 5th 9:28 pm
Landed approximately 117 shad in 12 outings. The shad I got on 3/9 were all bigger then any fish caught after that time and were mostly larger roe in the 22" to 21" range. All of them were caught between frenchtown and Yardley and from multiple location on any given day. Other fish of note that we caught or saw while shad fishing were: Walleye, stripers, sturgeon and herring.
Shad the Rapper | bucks county | Wednesday April 5th 8:34 pm
Switched over to stripers today for the season. Landed one about 24" and lost one.

ShadHarris | Gap | Tuesday April 4th 9:28 pm
First outing - wading. Few miles N of gap but not by much. Good early season spot. Fished 5-7pm. Water was about 49. 3 of us - saw one caught one lost any I had two legitimate bumps in the strike zone. Did not ever feel like there was a body of fish there. The conditions were conducive based on decades of history to suggest better action but it’s too early to call it a bad run. Still optimistic bit for it to be a banner run - Lambertville should be on fire right now but it’s not.
Kurt Miller | Northampton | Tuesday April 4th 7:53 pm
Tough day today. Beautiful weather, but only went 1/4. Dave's Blades again! Purple Crush & Lantern Fly! Thanks Dave!

DennisScholl | Hellertown | Tuesday April 4th 5:40 pm
JD, that's a pretty broad statement regarding the year's run, considering it's only April 4. Patience is a virtue.
Charles Mac. | 1/2 mile above Bushkill boat launch. | Tuesday April 4th 4:39 pm
Fish for hour and a half. 0 Shad 1 bass. Water still quite cold. Patience. They will be here.
JD | | Tuesday April 4th 1:22 pm
Although there were some nice large early fish, it looks like another weak run this year. Hopefully the main run will be stronger.
George B | Conshohocken, PA | Tuesday April 4th 8:02 am
Thanks Joseph, I'm looking to go late Friday morning. Sincerely appreciate your input.
Joseph C. | Phoenixville & Princeton | Tuesday April 4th 7:18 am
I put in a couple hours in the chilly sunshine yesterday morning trying it from the shore below Lambertville. I had a few guys for company and we each got a fish. They were using flutter spoons and I had my darts. Not what I could call hot action. As far as I can tell the water hasn't gotten to 50F yet, so there's room for improvement....A question for the poster fishing the shore in Easton: are you fishing more toward the Lehigh or the Delaware?
| | Monday April 3rd 11:06 pm
Several more from shore Easton area
Kurt Miller | Northampton | Monday April 3rd 9:16 pm
Dave's Blades came through today. Not a lot of fish, but it's a start. Had 6 hook ups, got 4 to the boat. Purple Crush and Lantern Fly did the job. Thanks Dave!

shad the rapper | Bucks county | Monday April 3rd 5:52 pm
We got about 12 more today, mostly buck and some small roe. Casting darts and poor mans D riggers worked. there was alot of debris too but still fishable.
Joseph C. | Phoenixville & Princeton | Monday April 3rd 9:10 am
@George B... It works and is a healthy, too. Should very good fishing there this week. If you want to catch more Hickories I'd try the old Phoebe spoon. The Americans should be there in good numbers as well.
George B | Conshohocken, PA | Sunday April 2nd 10:07 pm
I went down this afternoon. There's no way down from the Spring Garden Bridge. I'm going to try the Sweet Briar cutoff, it seems like its the only way other than walking from the zoo.
shad the rapper | Bucks county | Sunday April 2nd 7:07 pm
We did good today with a good steady bite for about 2 hrs, even mix of roe and buck about 12 or so total. Poor mans D rigger caught the fish.
WG | | Sunday April 2nd 1:57 pm
@Eli- I fished the Potomac yesterday, landed 30 hickory and 1 American shad in 4 hours in the steady rain….lost at least as many as I landed because of the approaching cold front….I’d say it’s prime time now….
Eli wisor | Altoona Pennsylvania | Saturday April 1st 10:35 pm
Does anyone know if the shad run on the Potomac is really on fire yet thanks in advance planning a day trip the 7th so just wanted to know thanks in advance

Chris S | Stroudsburg | Saturday April 1st 5:03 pm
Anyone seeing anything north of Easton yet?
Joseph C. | Phoenixville, PA / Ewing, NJ | Saturday April 1st 4:14 pm
Thanks George B! I can't see how to get down onto the west side of the river from Spring Garden Street, but will be happy to learn......I did what I thought might work yesterday morning and found a nice place to park on Girard Ave. My friend and I then walked down a block to Landsdowne Drive and around the bend to Sweetbriar. From there it was an easy walk down the MLK to the fishing area. It was spooky - wide open and almost nobody in sight the whole way. Fishing was pretty good, I landed 2 Hickories my first 2 casts. From then it was a slow pick, as it seemed pods of fish cycled around the basin. The falling tide brought a change in that after 4 Hickories it switched to American Shad. I landed 2 and lost a couple more after solid hits. I also landed 2 catfish, both snagged in the tail. Not bad for early season there. Water temp was just over 51F. I fished from 11:30 to about 2:00.

Hi. Glad to see people are catching fish so early. I put together some information on shad that a colleague and I wrote a few years ago as part of an educational project with which I was involved. I thought some of you would like to read the history behind the fish we hold in such esteem. Click the link below to open a PDF binder that holds the information. You probably need Adone Reader to read it and Adobe Acrobat if you'd like to download and store it. You may have to copy and paste the link in your browser. I don't know if the link is instantly "alive." Enjoy! https://acrobat.adobe.com/link/review?uri=urn:aaid:scds:US:d49bd8c0-749d-3121-b467-8734e2577c72

About 15 shad today between 1 and 4pm. Mostly bucks and a few roe. We had a flurry of fish casting darts briefly but most came on the poor mans D rigger. couple walleye on the f-spoons too.
